Imogene is young, beautiful, kisses like a movie star, and knows everything about every film ever made. She's also dead, the legendary ghost of the Rosebud Theater. Arthur Roth is a lonely kid with a head full of big ideas and a gift for getting his ass kicked. It's hard to make friends when you're the only inflatable boy in town. Francis is unhappy, picked on; he doesn't have a life, a hope, a chance. Francis was human once, but that's behind him now. Meet these, and half a dozen more, in the first part of one of the most praised collections this century. 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS is irresistible, addictive fun, showcasing a dazzling new talent. Stories: Introduction, Best New Horror, 20th Century Ghost, Pop Art, You Will Hear The Locust Sing, Abraham's Boy, Better Than Home
Review
This collection is one of the best short story cd's I've heard in a long time, and reminds me of Clive Barkers Books of Blood for pure originality and awesomeness. Each story had a different feel, a different nuance -though not all of them could be called horror, some were more poignant than others- but all were brilliant and inspiring. There were times when I was really creeped out by the Hill's ideas (and also a little peeved, because I often wished that I'd thought of them first...)
I would recommend Joe Hill's writings to anyone that love horror, and who miss the buzz from reading such well crafted stories. Prepare to go on a wonderful, and often frightening, journey looking for your own 20th Century Ghosts.
Abrahams Boys is a really interesting story, focusing on Professor Abraham Van Helsing after the events of Dracula. Believe me when I say that you won't see the end coming and you'll marvel at the way that Hill manages to breathe originality into such an old story, such as Dracula.
David Ledoux manages to masterfully convey all the nuances of Jo Hill's writings and adds to the stories tensions. If anything, the audio cd makes the stories more creepy because you relinquish the element of control which makes the journey that much more unnerving.
