A series of illustrated children's stories for 5 - 8 year olds, addressing issues such as bullying, disability and prejudice. "It was a quarter past midsummer. In a garden, next to a lane, Badger the Mystical Mutt...had gathered all the ingredients for his fabulous new spell...Meanwhile, in the lane at the bottom of the garden, all was not well. Hamish was running for his life." Pet Idol is in town, and Hamish, a floppy-eared spaniel, is the favourite to win. But as the spotlight falls on the lane, Top Dog and his gang of strays are hunted by the Dog Catcher, and blame Hamish for their troubles. With his haphazard magic, an appetite for toast and a strange travelling machine, can Badger the Mystical Mutt save Hamish from Top Dog and his gang? And can Hamish still win Pet Idol?
Review
Badger the Mystical Mutt is a brilliant book written by Lyn McNicol and Laura Jackson - it is charming, fun, full of magic, mystery and an inspiration, and I have to say I just loved it, especially the fact that when things go wrong or Badger needs time to think, he tries to magic up a pile of buttered toast!! He has a magical machine called the Wim-Wim that takes you to a very grumpy cloud to go to the unicorn.
A wonderful adventure for kids up to 10, but also for parents who enjoy reading to younger children - all of this with the added bonus of some excellent illustrations of what's happening by Laura Jackson.
McNicol & Jackson have not been afraid to address the issue of bullying and have been able to do it in and inspirational wayl without lecturing to the under 10 year olds
I more than highly recommend this book for all children.
