'Abby stepped in the lift and the doors closed with a sound like a shovel smoothing gravel. She breathed in the smell of someone else's perfume, and lemon-scented cleaning fluid. The lift jerked upwards a few inches. And now, too late to change her mind and get out, with the metal walls pressing in around her, they lunged sharply downwards. Abby was about to realize she had just made the worst mistake of her life ...'Amid the tragic unfolding mayhem of the morning of 9/11, failed Brighton never-do-well Ronnie Wilson sees the chance of a lifetime, to disappear and reinvent himself in another country. Five years later the discovery of the skeletal remains of a woman's body in a storm drain in Brighton, leads Detective Superintendent Roy Grace on an enquiry spanning the globe, and into a desperate race against time to save the life of a woman being hunted down like an animal in the streets and alleys of Brighton. Acclaim for "Not Dead Enough": 'Another smashing thriller from the UK's most respected crime writer' - "Daily Mirror".

Review
It is a long time since I have read a Peter James book and to come back into his work with 'Dead Man's Footsteps' was a joy. Set at the time of the 9/11 catastrophy of the twin towers and 2007, we bounce between 3 countries - England, America and Australia - as Peter takes us on a magical mystery tour of who is who and how many names and experiences can our few protagonists go through.
Roy Grace, now Detective Superintendant is still looking for his wife Sandy who disappeared 9 years ago; Ronnie Wilson is about to reinvent himself when he's caught up in the 9/11 events, and who does the skeleton belong to found in the sewer. Here on in begins a roller coaster of how the life from three different countries collide together to make an utterly fascinating puzzle of mind games and red herrings. Alot of the scenes describes are for real - Peter James does extensive research for all his books, this one being no exception and his charactor Roy Grace is based on a real policeman in the Sussex police force.
I was very taken with his description of the horror people on the ground went through when the planes hit the towers - and how when local dog owners where called to bring their dogs to Ground Zero just so the workers could stroke a dog to bring relief, calm and hope to them.
Peter is an excellent writer second to none and his Roy Grace books are about to be made into a TV series.
I more than highly recommend this book.
