An Alex Delaware thriller - compulsive, intriguing and unputdownable
Early one morning a foreman shows up at the building site of a mega-mansion. Proceeding up unfinished plank steps, he arrives at the master bedroom. There, lying on a blanket, are a man and a woman, stabbed and bludgeoned to death.
Who are the lovers? Why have they chosen a construction site for their late-night tryst. Is the double murder simply a horrific example of wrong-place, wrong-time? Or were the victims stalked? And will the outrage be repeated?
Alex and Milo are called in and as they struggle to make their way through the alternative universe that is the domain of the impossibly rich, they discover a scheme rooted in deception and evil beyond even their imaginations.
Review
Another detective case by Jonathan Kellerman, ‘Evidence', finds main characters psychologist Alex Delaware and Detective Milo Sturgis investigating the murder of eco-friendly architect Desmond Backer and his unknown female partner discovered in a half-built mansion in a glamorous part of L.A.
I have always enjoyed reading Mr. Kellerman's books. The chemistry between Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis is usually entertaining and quickens the read. The psychological insight offered by Delaware usually adds an edge to the plot but in this instance he seemed to follow Milo Sturgis around and had very little to no psychological insight to offer. The written formula seems a little bit tired. It's a shame, the writing is still superb, but the mystery has gone and the action of previous books has disappeared.
I hope that Alex Delaware is not reaching the end of his usefulness as a character. I also felt the plotting was a little tenuous - it didn't draw me in the way the stories from the early books did. None of the characters caught my imagination in any way.
A quick read but not the best of the series.
