With his characteristic warmth, inventiveness and brilliant wit, Alexander McCall Smith gives us more of the gloriously entertaining comings and goings at 44 Scotland Street, the Edinburgh townhouse. Six-year-old prodigy Bertie perseveres in his heroic struggle for truth and balanced good sense against his insufferable mother and her crony, the psychotherapist Dr Fairbairn, going as far as to make a short-lived bid for freedom on a trip to Paris with the Edinburgh youth orchestra. Domenica sets off on an anthropological odyssey with pirates in the Malacca Straits, while Pat attracts several handsome admirers, including a toothsome suitor named Wolf. And Big Lou, eternal source of coffee and good advice to her friends, has love, heartbreak and erstwhile boyfriend Eddie's misdemeanours on her own mind.
Review
There is definitely something in the air with the third of the hugely popular 44 Scotland Street series - Love Over Scotland - revolving around the many colourful characters that come and go at no 44. McCall Smith handles the lives - the loves - and the occupants of this now world-famous address with his usual charm and deftness. The strong Tory chartered surveyor, the pushy mother, most importantly in this novel, the Italian speaking prodigy, Bertie - they're all in there. This is Alexander McCall Smith being his clever witty and entertaining self all over again.
According to the publicity for this book it is due to be made into a television series in 2007 Because: 44, Scotland Street has proved to be the most desirable address in town.
This book is defiantly the best of his three novels.I could not put it down and hope that you will read it and tell us what you think also.
