Jane Tomlinson, a mother of three from Leeds, was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 26. Despite being given the all clear, in 2000 she learned that the disease had spread to her lungs and bones and there was nothing more the doctors could do. Faced with such devastating news, Jane did not give up. She decided to fight - the life sentence, the disease, and the expectations of living with cancer. Battling fierce pain to complete three London marathons, the Great North Run, and a 2,500 mile bicycle journey 'From Rome to Home', she has raised nearly GBP1million for charity. THE LUXURY OF TIME is Jane's story, told with her husband Mike. It is the story of a marriage, of two ordinary people made extraordinary by the courage with which they face their greatest challenge. They tell, in alternating chapters, what life has been like since 1990 when Jane was first diagnosed, how they coped separately and together, how they told their children, how they deal with the physical and emotional pain. With searing honesty and surprising humour, they write about their fears, hopes and ambitions for an uncertain future.
Review
This book is in fact the first in the trilogy of books that Jane and Mike wrote together, it tells of the heartbreak of being diagnosed with breast cancer and the agony that the family had to go through to overcome this distructive disease.
Jane and Mike had their ups and downs as does every family with such a pressure on them. Jane hoped that she would see her children grow up and start school, especially young Steven who she hoped she would be alive to actually see him start school. For her each milestone was a plus.
Jane and Mike never ceased to amaze me within this book; how they just got on and even at times when everything seemed to be going wrong, they just got from one appointment to another. There are times in the book when you can feel the tension between Jane and Mike especially when he takes her away and doesn't tell her that she is up for an award, or that she has yet more interviews to do! Most people would not want that intrusion into their lives but in the end Mike arranged, and Jane would do what had been planned, because of her will to succeed and make money for Cancer Awareness, which they as a family were living with day by day.
This is another superb book by the two and well worth shelf space on anyones bookshelf. I personally don't think I could have been as gracious as Jane was if I had been so ill with Cancer.
