Trueman Bradley is a genius detective with a difference, he has Asperger's Syndrome (AS). Trueman leaves his hometown of Heartville, Illinois, and arrives in New York City, hoping to fulfil his dream of becoming a private detective, like his comic book heroes. He is soon told that a guy with AS could not possibly succeed as a detective. Undeterred, Trueman uses his exceptional mathematical skills to invent a crime-fighting equation, and with the help of his new friends and some amazing inventions, sets out to test his skills against the criminal world of New York. He is determined to show the police, his friends, and himself, that a guy with AS can become as good a detective as anyone else, maybe, even, one of the best. "Trueman Bradley - Aspie Detective" is a fantasy adventure that will capture the imagination of anyone interested in Asperger's Syndrome.
Review
My copy of ‘Trueman Bradley' is very dog eared because it has been read by all my family and many of my friends and we all love it. Sadly my 4 month old puppy loves the book too which is why half of the cover is missing!
I was privileged to read the book before publication for asteens and knew within the first few lines that I was going to like it. It is actually quite hard to describe because it is not to adults. It is for people on the spectrum, people interested in people on the spectrum but is equally applicable to anyone who likes escapism in the form of a light detective story with a moral.
The book centres around Trueman Bradley, a young man who dreams of solving crime like his comic book hero. Through a lot of lucky encounters he teams up with several people who all have the skills needed to complement his own. With the help of his friends he sets up a viable detective agency where he is able to use his intellect, powers of observation and mathematical skills to good effect. His team mates understand him and are able to support and encourage him to optimally function and run a very successful business. Trueman develops crime busting formulas and gadgets and formulas to help make predictions about what will happen next which enable him to solve crimes where others have failed. Trueman has Aspergers and finds the uncertainty and unpredictability of life and people hard to deal with but he develops strategies and tools to help.
This book is unique and subtley educates, entertains and can be shared across the generations. I hope it will be made into a tv series or film for family viewing with the first asperger hero.
I highly recommend this book - delightfully different and indulgent fantasy for everyone.
