The John Letters edited by Hunter Davies (audio cd)

Genre
Review

I found John Lennon's letters absolutely riveting - and yes they are quite often mundane, but it is in this mundaneness that we learn more. It was fascinating to hear Yoko Ono read the foreword - it just felt weird as if she didn't quite feel comfortable with it! But the introduction by Hunter Davies was very very long but again lots of fascinating details of how owners of letters discovered that they'd been sold on by family and friends never to be gotten back and of course much much more.

This is an epic finale to Kate Mosse's tremendous Languedoc triology, featuring a battle to the bitter end between war, hatred and greed set against courage, strength and passion.
Mosse superbly weaves the story of the transfer and hiding of a vital early Christian manuscript by a fourth century monk Arinius with the bitter Nazi regime in Vichy France.

Conscious of the decline of the Roman Empire and the threat posed by the hordes of barbarians snapping at Rome's heel, the belligerent monk seeks to find sanctuary for the Codex deep in the mountains of southern France.

The Mystery of the Midnight Ghost

Author
Helen Moss
Genre
Review

This is the second book in The Adventure Island series with Emily Scott ,Jack and Drift the dog.

A film is being made at Pendragon Manor, which has a legend about a ghost and the leading lady has disappeared so Emily and co are quickly on the case.

I like the way that Helen Moss portrays some of her characters, especially Sid Golding who is the film Director, who is completly over the top and a nightmare to work with - but the leading male Brett di Blanco, a lovely play on, is not much better because he thinks so much of himself.

Hearing Barbara Flynn reading Jennifer Worth's words brought back a picture of when I saw after the interview I did with her. She was sitting in the bay window in her back room with the sun light streaming on her while she signed her first book 'Call the Midwife' - Barbara whilst not sounding like Jennifer certainly evoked what she was - a caring no nonsense person who wrote with a great deal of common sense.

Where Are My Lambs

Review

I have to say - I am a huge fan of both author Francesca Simon and actress Miranda Richardson, who's renditions of these Early Reader books makes them such fun to read and to listen to. They feel so alive and raring to go - and in this story - a female sheep who's searching the farm looking for her lamb.

A simple story well told made even more fantastic by Miranda Richardson - one that I feel will entertain both child and parent.

An Echo in the Bone

Review

The latest in this fascinating time travel series following Clare, a 20th century nurse and doctor, traveling back to 18th century Scotland and the colonies to be with her now husband, the Highlander Jamie.

Excellent well drawn characters, good dialogue and description, intriguing plots and sub plots, plus interesting detail of everyday life back then, particularly, for me, on the medical/herbal front. Mix in some celtic mysticism, and in this volume some native American wisdom and set in a period of great change, and you have a really good read.

Using the virus culled from mutating vampire bats, the military (American of course) create human vampires using death row criminals, I'm not quite sure why. Needless to say all does not go well and the virals escape, causing complete breakdown of society and resulting in the only chance of humankind's salvation resting with a young girl.
