Introduction

In early June, David and I went down to Cranborne Dorset to meet up with Luke Gamble and chat with him about his latest book The Vet:The Big Wild World. We met him in his tiny surgery Pilgrims where he first struck out on his own - we also met up with some of the WVS gang - Chris, James and Linda. Both Chris and James and one other person were squeezed into a back room because Linda was squashed in the front into the most amazing oldie worldy bookshop that I could have spent hours in just perusing the books there! However we were there to do an interview!!

Luke took us to the back of the surgery to a very large shed where WVS and Pet Air started but which now housed medical donations, to be sent around the world to vets and charities working with the local people helping and educating them in look ing after their animals.

During our conversation (with input from Angel, Luke's 7 month old ridgeback puppy) I came to realise that Luke is somewhat a visionary about animal care and how to involve people. He has an ocean full of enthusiasm and tremendous determination.

I loved Luke Gamble's first book ‘The Vet: My Wild and Wonderful Friends' and his second book ‘The Vet:the Big Wild World' is just brilliant. In the first book we ended with Luke about to propose to his girlfriend Cordelia - now in his second book we meet him trying to feed a seal pup without getting his fingers bitten off - curtsey of his vet friend Sam, who he seems to be able to con into going on pretty much all of his ventures both here in Britain and abroad.

Introduction

Met Luke Gamble on Friday 10th June at his vet surgery in Fordingbridge, Hampshire to chat with him about his book 'The Vet'. We arrived 45 minutes early and Luke arrived 10 minutes later, dressed in mud brown shirt and knee length shorts! He's exactly as you see him on tv but much finer boned and a wicked twinkle in his eye!

His dog Leuwen is a massive gentle giant of a dog who slept under the table whilst his master enthused about his work and the Worldwide Vetinary Service.

I think it's fair to say that Luke Gamble is a modern day James Herriot with stories a plenty from both here in the U.K. and abroad. He writes with an ease of style that makes his book warm, friendly, fun and informative.

There are the very funny anecdotes such as being bitten by a squirrel - it really is very funny and the heart rending chapter dealing with Foot and Mouth. Luke was one of the very first vets involved with the culling. But here Luke also shows the emotional and physical devastation the farmers go through.
