Kitty Goes To WAshington

Author
Carrie Vaughn
Genre
Review

Apparently this is a follow up book to 'Kitty and the Midnight Hour', but having not read it, I feel like I'm missing out on something! So, I would suggest that if you have haven't read the first book, that you do so before going onto 'Kitty Goes To Washington'.

I must say the title of this book is rather off putting, as it reminded me of the graded books we read as kids at school, Timmy Loses a Tooth or Emma Visits The Hospital, very childish!

Kitty Takes a Holiday

Author
Carrie Vaughn
Genre
Review

As with Carrie Vaughn' previous books, she has kept the tone fairly light but with the exception of a couple 'serious' situ's.

The main antagonist, Kitty, almost takes a step back from the action, and you see her more as a woman than a girl. The character development has also come along a little too. Vaughn explores the back stories of her characters, so you gain a better insight into them and their currant positions/situations.

Grave Secret

Author
Charlaine Harris
Genre
Review

This is the first book that I have read by Charlaine Harris. I have to admit I only realised half way through that this was the final part of a 4 book series, which would explain why, as I started to read this I was surprised at the author's lack of detail relating to the characters. Therefore I would probably suggest reading the first 3 to enjoy the book to its full potential. However, saying that, I did find this book fast-paced and enjoyable to read. ..read more

Heart Shaped Box

Review

From a simple premise comes the creepiest and most unnerving read I've had in a long time. Neil Gaiman was right when he said that Heart Shaped Box is the most assured debut since Clive Barkers The Damnation Game.

Horns

Joe Hill
Genre
Review

Yet again, Joe Hill emerges triumphant with another grand horror yarn. The most original premise: Ig Perrish wakes up with two horns growing out of his head and can make people tell him their deepest darkest secrets; which is just as well because he's been framed for the murder of his ex-girlfriend!

20th Century Ghosts

Joe Hill

Review

This book is one of the best short story collections I've read in a long time, and reminds me of Clive Barkers Books of Blood for pure originality and awesomeness. Each story had a different feel, a different nuance -though not all of them could be called horror, some were more poignant than others- but all were brilliant and inspiring. There were times when I was really creeped out by the Hill's ideas (and also a little peeved, because I often wished that I'd thought of them first...)

The Man in the High Castle

Author
Phillip K Dick
Genre
Review

To me, this is the high mark to which all "future / alternate history" books need to be judged by and is a testament to Dick's brilliance/ Positing a "what if" scenario around the allies losing the second world war we see a frightening plausibility that Dick spins into a virtual framework of paranoia and oppression. Throw in a fair smattering of eastern philosophy and you have one of the best science fiction novels ever written.

Necronomicon Review 2

Author
H.P.Lovecraft
Genre
Review

Like most of my favourite authors, I stumbled upon H P Lovecraft by accident. I'd heard about him through reading about other horror authors and Lovecraft's name kept cropping up. I found one of his books in a car boot sale, and the rest -as they say - is history.

The stories that feature in this lovingly collected edition show the width and depth that was Howard Philips Lovecraft fantastical fiction. Why fantastical? Lovecraft managed to walk the knife edge between the genres of horror; fantasy and science-fiction like no other author.

From Dead to Worse Review 2

Charlaine Harris
Genre
Review

The continuing adventures of human telepath Sookie Stackhouse, set in modern times in the Deep South of the USA.

The remainder of the Supes - supernatural beings such as werewolves, fairies, wiccans etc - are becoming more active and seem likely to follow the lead of the vampires in making their existence known to the human population. In this story the werewolves take centre stage and Sookie, as a designated friend of the local pack, becomes involved in their vicious pack wars. Bon Temps must start ranking with Midsomer for the number of murders !
