It is the story of engineer, Jean Baptiste Barrat, charged to remove the corpses from the overflowing cemetery of Les Innocents, Paris, on the eve of the revolution. Most book club members enjoyed this book, particularly enjoying the richness of the prose despite the unpleasant subject matter. The putrifying atmosphere of the graveyard was so vividly portrayed it was too much for a couple of our readers, pervading the air, the food and even the breath of the citizens.

A powerful novel set in Africa about a professional revolutionary called Elias Elmedia who firmly believes in the bond of human love. The author writes in a beautiful haunting style, that does not detract from the atrocities
he recounts.I enjoyed this book very much becouse it is a medition about ideaology and humanity yet it raises
so many questions about the fulity of war and the people it is supposed to protect.

A thought provoking book with a very good plot that will remain in my memory for a long time.

A haunting tale of redemption and retribution in the lawless reaches of America's Deep South following the end of the second World War.

Beautiful evocative writing with a story line that is never predictable and finely drawn characters that capture concern and interest. Particularly well done is life on and around the Mississippi steamboats - the crew, the ports of call, the business and the punters.

Very good - recommended

I really enjoyed this book. Glenn David Gold has a wonderful turn of phrase and really manages to describe a forgotten age in our history. Reading Sunnyside made me realise how little I know of World War I - it was a real eye opener to know what conditions were like in Russia at that time. Being a film buff I loved reading about Charlie Chaplin and how the film studio United Artist's came into existence; it was also an insight into the character behind the "tramps" exterior.

A wonderful book - I didn't want to put this one down. I was mesmerised by the story; in love with the characters and wowed by the use of language; the colour of the descriptions and the joy of the dialogue! It helps that I love anything magical anyway, and this book delivers the magic in spades. It's easily in my top twenty, and I can't recommend it enough.

The Great Lover by Jill Dawson is an amazing book which evolved from a visit to Grantchester and her fondness of the poet Rupert Brookes. The way Jill has woven pieces of letters and the poetry of Rupert into this delightful novel makes it read as though it really did happen in the way that it reads today. ..read more

Review

This is a hilarious book, the antics of the author on his trip around the pubs and towns and villages of Ireland.   His aim is to visit all the places where there is a McCathy's bar and seek out his family roots.

Some of the stories that he tells are just really fantastic. Some are real tall stories as any Irish man can tell you especiaaly when they have been downing the local tipple.
