The Donut Diaries:Revenge is Sweet

Author
Anthony McGowan
Genre
Review

Once again we see Dermot still struggling with his donut/doughnut habit. Only this time he has an arch nemesis, the Floppy Haired Kid, and a crazy P.E. teacher to contend with. He has sworn revenge! He manages his way through the 'diary' with his usual flare and aplomb. His sworn enemies bring a nice touch to this set of books which is proving to be the British version of the 'Wimpy Kid' series. I think Anthony McGowan has tapped into great story that kids are going to grow with, as the character grows.

Donut Diaries Bk 1

The title pretty much explains where the book is going... The Donut Diaries! The protagonist is Dermot Milligan and he's a BIG kid who eats A LOT of donuts (doughnuts???) each day! He's been told he needs to stop, lose weight, and is now seeing a nutritionist and if this doesn't work, it'll be Fat Camp! Sounds very American, right? Well it's not! It's British... Hooray!! I don't get the American spelling of donut... maybe I'm just being picky though! ..read more

Every Other Day

Author
Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Genre
Review

When I was given this book to review, I must admit that the title completely threw me. "Every Other Day"... Hmmm.... Yeah, I can't say that I would have chosen this book solely based on the title. I then read the blurb on the back and thought, how the hell is that gonna work? Becoming a hunter during the twilight hours, every other day, surprisingly enough... it works! But what sells it, is the science that's integrated into the story telling. Jennifer Lynne Barnes obviously has a scientific mind and has relished being able to use it in this story... BUT you don't get bogged down in it. ..read more

Moondance of Stonewylde

Author
Kit Berry
Genre
Review

This is the second book in the dramatic Stonewylde series about a pagan community in Dorset.

Cracks are beginning to appear in this idyllic community with the relationship between Yul and Sylvie growing every
day, because Magus is becoming more frightening and manipulative, especially when he realizes that Sylvie has something very special that he can exploit.

Sleep Difficulties and Autism Spectrum Disorder

Author
Kenneth J Aitken
Genre
Review

This is an extremely well researched book, clearly demonstrating that Aitken is of the old school psychologists who, are sadly, in my opinion, a dying breed. Such clinicians were properly schooled in the interpretation of clinical research, being ever alert to weaknesses/flaws in experimental design or in the over simplistic, potentially damaging conclusions drawn from correlational research.

Shadows at Stonewylde

Author
Kit Berry
Genre
Review

This is the fourth book in this amazing series, which I thought that now that Magus was dead that the story would not be so compelling - after all he was a larger than life character, but I could not have been more wrong because this is a gripping story, with new characters which form the main part of the plot.

It seems to me that the more books Kit Berry writes the longer and darker they become, but they are totally and utterly absorbing.

Dead Man's Grip

Peter James
Genre
Review

Well, I'm a big fan of Peter James and I always look out for his signing events when a new book is launched. This time was no different and I was very lucky to be invited to tag along to Peter's book launch being held at a bleak, windy and rainy Shoreham Harbour. After getting slightly lost en route - sadly, I think I'm one of those people who should use a sat nav for even the shortest of journeys - we finally parked up and got blown along to a huge warehouse on the edge of the quay, with Police everywhere. ..read more

The Devil's Diadem

Author
Sara Douglass
Genre
Review

Sara Douglass' novel, The Devil's Diadem, is subtly written. She takes you back through time to 12th century England as a plague sweeps it's way across the country. You see life played out in front of you, of the ordinary folk just going about their business, little known to them that all hell is breaking loose! Maeb, the protagonist, is an unlikely heroine. Douglass has done a great job with fleshing out this terrified and lonely woman as she struggles to save her world. And as Maeb goes through these struggles, Douglass begins to weave in the' subtle help of the supernatural too. ..read more

Dead Rules

Author
R.S. Russell
Genre
Review

I almost laughed when I saw this book in my pile to review BUT decided to give it a chance. The title, Dead Rules, is a little hokey but the sub-title/by-title (?) She Loved Her Boyfriend To Death just had me in giggling! Ah well, I was to be shown that you shouldn't judge a book by it cover... or title!!! This is a classic YA (Young Adult) science fantasy offering but with some creepy depth to it.

Perfect People

Review

This was a bit of a change to the Peter James books I’ve read lately, which has mostly being a diet of Roy Grace novels,  so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but no worries – this is a great book with a sad twist at the end which brought a tear to my eye!
