Lyn McNichol & Laura Jackson 2013 on Badger the Mystical Mutt

Interviewee(s)
Laura Jackson
Lyn McNicol

Introduction

Lyn McNichol and laura Jackson have done a brilliant job writing their Badger the Mystical Mutt books for children, and wanted to find out why they'd written them and who or what was their inspiration for quite an adventurous dog who stood up for victims of bullying - but also helped the bullies!

Interview

Vicky:- Who first thought up the idea for the books?

Lyn & Laura:- We can't remember who thought of it first. It just started out as an idea, and we thought it would be easy (hah!). We went on holiday together in 2005, and wrote 300 words then, and thought job done. We had so much to learn. We revisited it in 2008, and then it was only when we got our editor on board in 2010 that the first book started to take a more structured shape.

Vicky:- What or who was your inspiration?

Inside Asperger's Looking Out

Author
Kathy Hoopmann
Genre
Review

This such a fabulous book with clear descriptions on what the traits of Asperger's Syndrome are - wonderful depicted by the animal pictures that go with the text. They are very funny and visual and make you laugh out loud, but it is also very educational in an exciting way.

I more than highly recommend the excellent book for both children and adults and if anyone has Asperger's Syndrome and can't describe what it is to friends and relatives or even employers then give them this book to read - it goes a long way in helping them to understand the nature of the beast!

Flying to See Janet

Author
Laura Vickers
Genre
Review

This is an excellent book in describing what happens when you fly by aeroplane and what happens in the airport. Its description both in words and pictures mean that even the younger children from 3 upwards will have some idea of what is going on.

I would have this for all nervous children let alone just autistic ones because it is so clear and accurate and will take out a lot of the fear that goes with going through security and giving your baggage in to be put on the plane.

I highly recommend this for the 3-12 year old age group.

The John Letters edited by Hunter Davies (audio cd)

Author

John Lennon
Genre
Review

I found John Lennon's letters absolutely riveting - and yes they are quite often mundane, but it is in this mundaneness that we learn more. It was fascinating to hear Yoko Ono read the foreword - it just felt weird as if she didn't quite feel comfortable with it! But the introduction by Hunter Davies was very very long but again lots of fascinating details of how owners of letters discovered that they'd been sold on by family and friends never to be gotten back and of course much much more.

Dragonskin Slippers

Author
Jessica Day George
Genre
Review

I thought this was going to be an airy fairy book - was I ever wrong! Yes you do have the heroine, the hero, the knight and most importantly - the dragon, but these are no airy fairy characters - they are well rounded and grounded.

Jessica Day George swept me of my feet with her excellent story telling and although officially it is a childrens book - I do feel that teenagers and adults will enjoy it as well because it also gives you quite a roller coaster of a ride that's quite thrilling. I loved it and highly recommend it.

Review

Having been abandoned to the dragons in book one Dragonskin Slippers we now find Creel looking forward to a new adventure not just any adventure but a full blooded no holds bar action thriller that has an excellent female lead, who's full of get up and go. I loved book two as much as book one and was swept away with her as she flew with Shardas the King of the Dragons. This really is very exciting story telling with heart in mouth type adventure with a full cast of characters that feel like real people fighting for their lives and country - wonderful writing that is very satisfying.

Wow! This is a real roller coaster of a ride with both humans and dragons trying to find dragon queen Velika and save her from her kidnappers - but Creel also has her wedding to prepare for and make her wedding dress!
I have very much enjoyed all three books in this dragon trilogy - Jessica Day George is an excellent visual writer that keeps you turning the page as fast as you can. It is also a very satisfying read with and equally satisfying end tying up any loose ends for both humans and dragons.

I highly recommend this book for all age groups.

Footloose

Author
Rudy Josephs
Genre
Review

It was very strange reading Footloose by Rudy Josephs which is based on the 2011 film starring Julianne Hough and Andie McDowell. All I can recollect of the original film is Kevin Bacon dancing to Footloose! But this book actually gives us the whole story about the what's and why's. I'd had no idea that the film was about how the teenagers in Bomont deal with the tragic death of one of their own - Bobby the preacher's son. This is where Ren MacCormack comes in and challenges everyone, from Bobby's father Rev Shaw to Bobby's sister Ariel because he had banned dancing.

Review

I have to say - I am a huge fan of Michelle Paver - whether she is writing adults or children's fiction and it all feels so effortless. With this book Gods and Warriors she's back in children mode taking us deep into the Mediterranean to Greece with 12 year old Hylas being our lead character and Pirra of the same age being the main female lead.

For this new 5 book series Hylas is desperate to find his missing sister Issi whilst running away from the mysterious black warriors who have also killed his dog.
