The Walking Dead - Bk 1

Author
Cliff Rathburn
Robert Kirkman
Tony Moore
Genre
Review

One of the best horror comics I've read, this follows the lead from films such as Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later and shows the long term effects of zombie attacks on society and one mans goal to find safety amongst the madness.

I can not praise Bone enough, and I doubt that I will be able to do it justice.

The World of Quest v:1

Author
Jason T. Kruse
Genre
Review

Keith Giffen states on the back cover that "Quest" is a cross between Conan the Barbarian and Calvin & Hobbes... that's spot on and I wish I had said it first! This is a manic read - hyperkinetic action leaping off every page, grand splashes of colour and blobs of mucous splattering everywhere (this is a book for kids after all...) The story pours out at such a pace that the books over before you even know you've read anything and you're left wanting more!

Kickback

Author
David Lloyd
Genre
Review

David Lloyd is one of the best comic artists full stop. To me, he belongs in the same category as Dave Gibbons and David Mazzucchelli as content over style. Every panel, every pose and mannerism moves the story along. Nothing is erroneous; everything is fluid and plausible - You can not help but believe in the worlds that these guys create.
And such is the case for Kickback. For someone who has illustrated V For Vendetta and 2000AD, this is an artist who can make anything real and the world of corrupt cops and underworld nightmares is almost coming off out from the page.

Review

Damn it, I want to know what happens next!!! This is a very well crafted story which poses more questions than it answers and entices the reader in with it's sumptuous, almost dreamily realistic artwork. It's subtle and has taken great pains to introduce the characters rather than bombard the reader with action, action, action - which makes me think this story is going to have far reaching consequences for all characters concerned.

I really enjoyed reading this book and would very much like to read the next instalments.

The Nightmare FActory

Thomas Ligotti
Genre
Review

I wish someone had told me about the works of Thomas Ligotti before now... Not wishing to reduce him to a simple comparison, but he walks a crossed line between Harlan Ellison and H P Lovecraft. I can't say I understand all his concepts yet, but I really like that. It means that each time I read it, I'll understand more of it - that's quite exciting. His stories are on the brink of being nightmares themselves -all of them have stuck in my memory like all "good" nightmares should.

With the Light V:5

Another moving chapter as Hikaru moves into sixth grade facing a whole new set of problems, including a new teacher and a new school.

These are brave and wonderful books that tackle the very difficult subject of autism and a caring and informative way. There is so much empathy with, not only Hikaru and his family, but also some of the other characters as they grow.

The Manga Jesus V:1

Genre
Review

I'm not sure how I feel about a Manga retelling of the stories surrounding Jesus. I've learnt that Manga can be used to tell the most heartfelt and beautiful stories (as in the With The Light series) but I'm not sure whether the Jesus fables have transcribed well.

Let me start with the pro's - the artwork is very dynamic and detailed - Siku's style is very reminiscent of Larry Stroman in many panel's especially in the action sequences, but the detail in the architecture is precise and well researched.

The Manga Jesus V:2

Review

As I said in the Manga Jesus V:1 review, I'm not sure how well the story of Jesus translates into Manga. The book has been well researched and the artwork is extremely dynamic but I feel the essence of Christ has been lost or dulled down. In some ways The Christ has become some kind of Biblical superman, and to me the colloquialisms sit at odds with the very real messages that Christ conveyed.

The Manga Jesus V:3

I suppose these are the modern day equivalent to the old Cecil B De Mill Epic's. The artwork is very dynamic and the action flows, even though the dialogue is sometimes sporadic and at odds with itself (see previous reviews for more). This last volume speaks of the Crucifixion and subsequent resurrection and manages to give a lot of socio-political context to it. We understand a little more of just who Pontius Pilot was and why he was so reticent to pass judgement on Jesus.
