Angela McAllister 2011 on 'The Double Life of Cora Parry'

Interviewee(s)
Angela McAllister

Introduction

Wendy very much enjoyed Anglea's book 'The Double Life of Cora Parry' as it was set in the Victoria period, and wanted to know more about why she shows to write in this time.

Interview

Wendy: What was your inspiration for writing a book set in Victorian England?

Anglea: When I started writing about Cora I knew I wanted to explore ideas of identity and to play out moral choices. Because of this I wanted her to be able to develop a double life and for that deception to go unnoticed. When I looked for a setting that would give her opportunity and concealment, the overcrowded, crime-ridden back streets of Victorian London seemed perfect.

Wendy: Fletch is such a complex character - why did you write her out so early in the story.

Human Love

Author
Andrei Makine
Genre
Review

A powerful novel set in Africa about a professional revolutionary called Elias Elmedia who firmly believes in the bond of human love. The author writes in a beautiful haunting style, that does not detract from the atrocities
he recounts.I enjoyed this book very much becouse it is a medition about ideaology and humanity yet it raises
so many questions about the fulity of war and the people it is supposed to protect.

A thought provoking book with a very good plot that will remain in my memory for a long time.

Review

The concept of the book is a good one, but it did nothing
for me becouse I did not believe in the characters. I also found that as the story progressed, his style of writing didn't keep me interested because so little was happening and boredom soon set in.

A disappointing book which showed great promise.

The amorous Nightingale

Edward Marston
Genre
Review

The second book in the Restoration series, with Christopher Redmayne the Architect and the deeply religous
constable Jonathon Bale. The plot revolves around the abduction of an actress called Harriet Gower who happens
to be one of the Kings favourite ladies.

My favourite part of the book is about going to the Theatre.Today it would be like going to a foot ball match. The Gentry would have been in the Gallery, but the rabble who were in the Pitts were fighting and drinking and throwing things onto the stage,it must have been quite an experience.
